Here's a puzzler...

Ok, so I’m considering the Rodeo Run tomorrow.

I really wanted to go to the bar tonight on my way home and throw down a few drinks, though.  But, if I go to the bar, I’m not going to run tonight and I’m unlikely to run tomorrow.

On the other hand, if I were to have a few drinks tonight, it would be very beneficial to run tomorrow in order to detox my system and sweat out all of the bad mojo.

Of course, detoxing my system is the exact opposite of what I had planned to do tonight, and seems a little counter-productive and more than a little wasteful.

So, I’m left with the puzzle:  do I toxify my system only to detoxify my system tomorrow, or do I pass on the detoxification entirely and go with the booze, or do I pass on the toxification and opt to run tonight and/or tomorrow?  You see, these are the eternal questions of the universe.

Stupid leap day

Because of THIS day I have to run an extra freaking mile…  I hate leap year.  I hate running.

Bah.

Speaking of which I’m giving serious consideration to running the rodeo run tomorrow.  Why?  I’m not sure.  I think it’s because I like punishment.

Another mile in the books

Yet another mile down.  I haven’t had a chance to make up any ground the last few days, but I haven’t lost any ground the last few days, either.

I was surprisingly jelly-legged today.  Not sure what that was all aboat, but I’m sure it’s just a passing thing that’ll be fixed with more consistent running and better conditioning, eh?

Alas, I’ll probably hit the pavement again this weekend to see what my current second mile time is so that I can re-evaluate the time I spend on the elliptical.

In other news, I’m looking seriously into the “Nothing But Nets” campaign (www.nothingbutnets.org).  It looks like a real, good, organized effort to do something that’s not stupid.  A refreshing type of charitable organization that actually DOES SOMETHING (much like Child Advocates) rather than merely throwing money at a problem.  I’m becoming a big fan of the person-mobilizing charitable concept versus the funding-mobilizing charitable concept.  While I understand and appreciate the need for the funding, it seems somewhat detached from the actual soul-feeding benefits of actually DOING SOMETHING.  Sure, I can send $100 to the Red Cross, or I can actually volunteer at a shelter or give blood AND give $100.  In more ways than one the blood or sweat is more valuable than the money.  Which is why I like the Nothing But Nets campaign.  They’re piggy-backing on the measles vaccination network to distribute insecticide coated bed nets to combat malaria.  A $10 net distributed through an existing network.  Duh.  It’s astonishing they hadn’t thought of that before.  You don’t just save the one life, you save the life of every other person the infected mosquito would have bitten as well.  *SLAP FOREHEAD*.  So freaking simple.

Still feelin' goooood

Yea, I hate running.  I’d rather be doing… well, anything else, really.  Even really gross stuff or painful stuff.

But I’m feeling really good after my little 1 milers and still really good after 2 and 3 milers.  Tonight or Thursday I’m probably going to hit a 4 or 5 miler and maybe even mix in a mile on the road just to see what my current time is.  There’s a very VERY slim chance that I’ll be within 15 miles of my goal by the end of the month.

So, again, I hate running.  Seriously, I hate it.  But I like feeling good, and I like looking good, too.  Something about having a chick at starbux ask you if you’ve been working out just causes a guy to sport a big old Enzyte grin.

Ok, now February can start

Mile 32 in the books today.  That's officially the first run of February (despite the fact that the calendar says February is almost over).
Since today is the 25th, that means I'm supposed to have completed mile 53 today, which puts me 23 miles back.  I'm not particularly pleased about that, but I'm not devastated, either.

23 miles isn't even a whole marathon!!

I still think I can catch up by the middle of March, but the end of March might be a more realistic goal.

Interesting side note:  I'm not hating this process.  Curious, indeed.

blech

The term “blech” is sorely underused.  It’s concise, to the point, and absolutely clear.

For example:

Wife:  How was your day?

Husband:  Well, the copier on our floor went down and the tech wasn’t there until 1.  Of course, I had the reports to print out for the meeting and I had to run up and down the stairs all morning.  Needless to say the meeting did not go nearly as smoothly as planned because every time I went down to accounting to use their Neanderthal copier I got sucked into another Q&A session over some stupid inane crap.  After lunch it was ok.

Or…

Wife:  How was your day?

Husband:  Mostly blech, but after lunch it picked up.

Ben Bernake:  The economy is blah blah blah blah…  with interest rates blah blah blah blah…

OR…

Ben Bernake:  Economic conditions are currently blech, but conditions look favorable for a turn around in the next quarter.

OR…

Weatherdouche:  The 5 day forecast is 3 days of sunshine and nice temperatures followed by 2 days of blech.  Stay tuned for more.

See?  Blech makes everything better.

A little comic relief...

Father:  Son, sit down and eat your breakfast

Son:  (standing in his chair)  ooh?  Ba?  Ba?  Ba?  Oooh?

Father:  No.  Sit down.  Finish your breakfast.

Son:  (Still standing)OOH!  Ah.  Buh.  OOH!

Father:  Sit down.  We’re not going to play that game.

Son:  (yup, still standing)  AAAAAHHHHh!!!!  Uuuhhh.  (Throws waffle)

Father:  Fine, don’t eat the waffle.  The dog will enjoy that later.

Son:  eeeehehhhehhhhhHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!

Father:  Ok, if you’re going to be that way, get down.  (Picks up son, puts son on ground)

Son:  (flops on ground)  WAAAAAAAAAAAHAHHHHHHHhhhhhhHH   AHAHAHAHAHHHHHHHHHHH   WWWWWWWAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

(bashes head into couch)  WWWWWAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

HHHHHHHHHHH(Father takes newspaper into front room to finish article he’s reading)

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

(Father goes back into living room and turns on Disney Channel, goes to take shower and shave)

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

…  (Silence…)

This has been a little production I like to call “The Fine Art of the Morning Temper Tantrum”.

Sigh.

Once he stopped screaming and flailing about, and after I finished shaving,

I gave him his banana and waffle, and not a second sooner.

He ate the waffle.

The dog ate the banana.

Act II begins tomorrow.

Fallen off the wagon

Yea, I’ve fallen off the wagon in a big way.  I’m down something close to 20 miles.  Mileage wise I haven’t gotten out of January.  This weekend was BEAUTIFUL for running and I ran not a single step.

So there.  I’ve confessed.

My penance?  8 laps at a quarter mile each every day for a week, 2 Hail Marys and an Our Father.  I’ll get right on that.  I still might be able to catch up by the end of the first quarter.

Another one down

Put another mile in the books this morning.  4 more are scheduled for the evening which will put me at 28 (not counting those chickens yet, though).

Today is day 43.  Mile 24 is in the books, putting me 19 miles behind for the year.  If I tick off those 4 this evening, it’ll only be 15 behind for the year.  I can still catch up to the mark by the end of February without really straining myself.

I am, however, getting spoiled by running inside.  It doesn’t quite feel right.  Results do, however, translate to the pavement, so I’m not all torn up about it.

More later tonight.

Been slow lately

I haven’t really been keeping to my schedule lately.

According to the calendar, we’re on day 42 of the year.  According to my memory I’m on mile 24.  Not exactly a stellar record on my part.  School is tough, life is rough.  But that’s not really an excuse to use on beautiful weekends like this past one where I ran exactly zero miles—inside and out.

But that’s ok.  I still think I can catch up by mid to late March.

More later.
